Portfolio Instructions

 

All programs and schedules subject to change due to Covid-19.

However, the time during shelter in place may be a good opportunity to work on your portfolio.

 

 

Applicants are required to submit a portfolio with 5-10 images of their work along with their applications. 

 

These can be images of work you’ve done independently or for an art course. We are looking to get an idea of your skill level in various mediums, your creativity, your eye for design, etc. 

 

These images must be printed out, one image per page.  For each image, please list on either a facing page or on the back: the title, the medium used, and the date completed. If it was created for a course, please include the course title. 

 

Each year we have different commissions lined up for summer apprentices to work on, and we try to select apprentices whose interests and skill levels fit well with these jobs. 

 

Thus, prioritize showcasing work that you are proud of, but also try to include images of artwork in more than one medium. This will show us your range of skills and may qualify you for more projects we are working on. 

 

DUE TO COVID-19 DEADLINE FOR PORTFOLIO HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO JUNE 15

Submit with the rest of your application. Please place all application materials in a large envelope and either place in the Artstart mailbox on 317 Sutton Place, or bring them in to our warehouse during our after-school Winter Drop-In Sessions, held each Wednesday and Thursday from 4 to 6pm. This will give you a chance to meet the Lead Artists you might be working with during the Summer Program, see the workspace, and observe some of our current projects. 

 

Portfolios will be juried by the Creative Director and Lead Artists the following week. You will receive notice on your acceptance status by May 26th. 

Here is a list of logistics you need to know before our program begins: 

 

 

Our summer program begins 9 am Tuesday, June 23rd and runs through July 30th . You need to be committed to all 6 weeks of the program.

 

Artstart is located at 317 Sutton Place, off Standish Rd., off the Todd Rd. Exit from Highway 101 

 

Hours are Tues/Weds/Thurs, 9 am to 3 pm, each week, for six weeks. Apprentices are expected to complete a 6-hour work-day. You are expected to be on time and ready to go each morning at 9:00 am.  You are expected to treat this like a job. If you are late, there will be consequences. 

 

If you know you have to miss a day for an important reason, please tell your lead artist ahead of time so he/she can plan on your absence that day. You will also need to make up the days you miss; otherwise your pay will be prorated. 

 

We will have a 30-minute lunch break each day. Please bring enough food and water to keep yourself hydrated and fueled for your day of work. We have a refrigerator where you can store your food and drinks. 

 

We will be working with heavy and sharp objects, so for your safety, DO NOT wear open toed shoes. Wear comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting paint on!


We will have a fundraising event during the summer program that you will be expected to participate in and attend (held at Artstart on either August 1st or August 2nd, final date pending). Each apprentice show one or more pieces of artwork that will be for sale. If sold, 50% of proceeds will go to you the artist, and the other 50% will go to Artstart. Parents are also highly encouraged to participate in Artstart events throughout the six weeks. We appreciate all the help we can get!
